St. Catherine of Italy Church in Valletta will once again host its weekly lunchtime concert organised by Barocco Foundation on Tuesday 21 December 2021 at 12:30pm. This week’s recital presents brilliant soprano Hannah Bonnici accompanied by talented harpist Jacob Portelli, featuring a delightful choice of sparkling Christmas songs and arias.

Homer’s Odyssey is the driving force behind this piece, which summons its dancers to interpret the stubbornness, the pain, and the will of the epic hero returning home. Between the show of individuality of a character and their presence or dissolution in a collective, the tireless search for movement remains, and they fall, in order to rise again.

Some may say that Manwel Dimech had one true calling: to free the Maltese people from shackles riddled with oppression, ignorance and fear. The trio will be performing a selection of sacred and spiritual works starting by Quia respexit from Magnificat by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ave Maria by F. Paolo Tosti, Pie Jesu from Requiem by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Violin Concerto No.3 in G Major Opus 3 RV 310 by Antonio Vivaldi. Other pieces include The Lord’s Prayer by Albert H. Malotte, Serenade from Schwanengesang by Franz Schubert, Once upon a time in the West by Ennio Morricone, and Ave Maria by Ray Sciberras, amongst others.

Emilia Wiśniewska - violinist with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and Julia Miller- pianist, accompanist, and educator at the Malta School of Music, a Polish duo based in Malta, will take us on a journey throughout the 19th and 20th centuries of violin and piano music. During the concert, we will hear a virtuoso violin piece by Polish composer- Henri Wieniawski who was one of the best violinists of his time.

The MPO returns to Gozo with Principal Conductor Sergey Smbatyan in a concert presenting Stravinsky’s Suite for orchestra from the ballet The Firebird, based on the story of Prince Ivan’s search for this rare magical bird to help him free the imprisoned princesses.

The Russian folklore theme continues as highly acclaimed South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim joins for Tchaikovsky’s beloved Violin Concerto, a work imbued with poignant melodies culminating in a brilliant finale of folk-like dance motifs.
