The Foundation for Information Accessibility (FITA) and other SPOT project partners created the SPOT platform in order to address the requests of many individuals who expressed the need to compile a list of the accessible venues and related facilities across the Maltese Islands.  FITA and other project partners strive to ensure that the data contained within SPOT is relevant and up to date, but since the information is generated by users, we cannot be held liable for its accuracy.  If you wish to rectify incorrect information abut venues, it is best to submit a relevant review or update the venue description if you are the owner. 

SPOT is designed to facilitate the creation of a user community where people can share their knowledge and experiences about such venues.  As with travel sites, occasionally someone will try to game our system by attempting to post a fake review, so we thought it would be helpful to share our approach, our policies, and the actions we take to identify, block, and remove fraudulent reviews.

You the user

 SPOT members can submit reviews of their experiences across different venues. As the information within SPOT increases, we expect more users to come forward and submit their own reviews.  This will automatically average out inaccurate reviews through the numbers reporting factual information.

SPOT members should feel confident sharing their opinions, as it is their fundamental right to talk about that experience with others. We are proud of the goals we set out to achieve through SPOT, in providing valuable information to both clients, venue owners and services providers, in terms of knowledge about increased accessibility for all, irrispective of disability.

Sharing

We believe every experience counts, not just the ones where you paid the bill. If you have a party of 12 at an outing, we believe that all of them should have a voice. That's what SPOT stands for.  Additionally, whether a family member, a friend or yourself have a disability, it helps to share your experience, since many others may benefit from it.

Reviews

SPOT believes in promoting personal experiences, we therefore do not take lightly the decision to remove a review from our site. It might be easier to give in to censorship and remove reviews that a business owner disagrees with. But it goes against what we stand for, which is the right for genuine consumers to share their experiences.   In keeping with this philosophy, while we do require registration and exercise a moderator role, we don’t seek third-party verification.  Other reviewers will naturally take care of that.

Venue owners

Venue owners know that consumers rely heavily on reviews when making travel decisions. While unscrupulous businesses will try to cheat in order to attract more customers. We define “cheating” as positively reviewing their own business (or finding others to do so on their behalf) or negatively reviewing their competitors.  These activities constitute fraud. Posting fake reviews violates the SPOT Terms of Use, as well as unfair competition and/or consumer protection laws in many countries.

SPOT is designed so as not to label a venue as simply inaccessible or accessible.  Life is more complex than that.  We rate accessibility based on different criteria, because everyone has different needs, expectations and priorities.  It is much easier and effective to address negative feedback by submitting a reply to a bad review, providing detailed and accurate information in one's venue description and taking efforts to address the negative aspects highlighted in a review.
